Transitioning your Client’s Skincare Routine Seasonally 

Periodically, your client’s skin will need a refresh! That means removing dead skin particles and cycling their skincare products, especially as the seasons shift. Their skincare routine should be slightly modified as the seasons change in order to ensure that your client’s skin is getting the proper ingredients delivered. 

With environmental changes, their skin can drastically feel the effects. This includes the weather and environmental impurities in the air. Your tried and true summer skincare protocol may need a revamp as we head into the fall season, the same is also true when transitioning from winter to summer. What worked for your client’s skin during the warmer weather season may not necessarily be what their skin requires during the fall/winter.

Seasonal Skin Changes

So what exactly happens to the skin during seasonal transitions? During fall and winter, the air is dry, cold, and has reduced UV rays which can strip away the skin’s natural oils. This can make the skin more susceptible to irritation and sensitivities from the environment. Additionally, the skin’s reduction of oil production during these months can increase itchiness. Cooler temperatures can slow down cell turnover, or the rate at which dead skin cells shed to reveal newer, healthier cells, making your complexion appear dull and flaky.

Skin Cycling

Many of you may have heard about the new skincare trend, “skin cycling” that has skin professionals and dermatologists talking, but what is it? 

“The concept of skin cycling applies to a nighttime skincare routine, which involves using active ingredients only on certain days, and following them with ‘rest’ days,” explains Dr. Alexis Granite. “A four-day cycle is the most popular, which typically comprises using active ingredients for two nights of the week, followed by two nights of rest—and repeating.” 

Skin cycling can also be applied to changing certain skincare products during different seasons to allow your client’s skin to have a “break” from certain ingredients. It can also help prevent the skin barrier from being compromised due to the overuse of active ingredients. There are a variety of skincare ingredients that their skin can benefit from by changing certain products in our suggested everyday protocols. 

Skincare Routines, Revamped! 

Now that you know the importance of changing out some of your skincare protocols, let’s break down how to skin cycle properly! 

  1. Cleanse: Cleansing will never go out of style!
